Japanese Beetle

Specimen: Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica)

Time: Late-afternoon

Date: September 24, 2017

Location: Pine Haven Campground, Westport, Ontario

Observations: At first we thought this was possibly a Dogsbane Leaf Beetle, but following more research we are certain it is actually the invasive species Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica).

This beetle was observed on a flower, seemingly interested in the nectar. Most of what we’ve read about Japanese beetles seems to indicate they are eaters of foliage, but we don’t know a lot about them.

This beetle was photographed in its found location and was left undisturbed.
