Virginica Ctenucha Caterpillar

Specimen: Ctenucha virginica caterpillar

Time: Late-afternoon

Date: September 24, 2017

Location: Pine Haven Campground, Wesport, Ontario

Observations: We discovered this caterpillar climbing a stalk in a small wild garden. It was quick moving and difficult to photograph due to the wind. We didn’t want to disturb it by moving it, especially since we didn’t know anything about it.

The ctenucha virginica moth is endemic to eastern North America. It undergoes metamorphosis in July to August. We spotted this caterpillar in late September, but the summer of 2017 had a very late start and September was unseasonably hot.

This caterpillar was photographed in its found location and was left undisturbed.
